The government welcomes the announcement by Brazil, which holds BRICS’s presidency of 2025, regarding Indonesia’s membership in the intergovernmental organization of global emerging economies.

This milestone reflects Indonesia’s growing and active role in global affairs and its commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation for a more inclusive and equitable global order. Indonesia views its membership in BRICS as a strategic step to enhance collaboration with, and also between, fellow emerging economies in advancing the shared principles of equality, mutual respect, and sustainable development.

“As a growing and diverse economy, Indonesia is committed to contributing actively to the BRICS agenda, including promoting economic resilience, technological cooperation, sustainable development, and addressing global challenges such as climate change, food security, and public health,” the Indonesian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.

Indonesia believes that BRICS provides a valuable platform for fostering South-South cooperation and ensuring that the voices and aspirations of developing countries are heard and reflected in global decision-making processes.

The ministry said that Indonesia remains dedicated to working closely with all BRICS members, as well as with others, to build a just, peaceful, and prosperous world.

The ministry also extended its appreciation to the 2024 BRICS Presidency of Russia for their support and leadership in facilitating Indonesia’s entry into BRICS, as well as appreciates the Presidency of Brazil for announcing Indonesia’s inclusion in the group. This process is the culmination of a series of close engagement Indonesia has had with BRICS since attending the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg in 2023 under the Presidency of South Africa, and its participation in the Kazan Summit in 2024 under the Presidency of Russia.

Indonesia’s participation in BRICS is an extension of its constitutional mandate to play an active role in the maintenance of global order. Indonesia has and will continue its commitment to play a bridge-building role in numerous other multilateral fora. Indonesia looks forward to participating constructively in BRICS initiatives for the benefit of the global community.

Kadin response

Chairman of the Indonesia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), Arsjad Rasjid,  welcomes Indonesia’s joining as a full member of BRICS, describing as a historic moment that solidifies Indonesia’s position as a global economic power. This membership also opens up great opportunities to expand economic, trade and investment cooperation between Indonesia and BRICS countries, while supporting sustainable growth. The membership also brings new responsibilities, including mitigating the increasingly fierce global competition.

Kadin believes that with close synergy between the government and the business world, this membership will be a force to strengthen economic fundamentals, encourage innovation, and create new jobs, as well as an opportunity to push the economy to a higher level.

Kadin says that Indonesia is committed to being the government’s strategic partner in ensuring the benefits of BRICS membership can be felt by all Indonesians.

Indonesia’s full membership in BRICS was announced by the group’s presiding country Brazil announced on Monday.

Indonesia’s candidacy was endorsed by BRICS leaders in August 2023, according to the foreign ministry of Brazil, which holds the group’s presidency for 2025. However, the world’s fourth-most populous nation opted to formally join the bloc only after the formation of its newly elected government last year.

BRICS was formed by Brazil, Russia, India and China in 2009, and South Africa was added in 2010. Last year, the alliance expanded to embrace Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates. Saudi Arabia has been invited to join but has not yet done so.
