Prabowo to meet Bill Gates, discuss support for free nutritious meals program
President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to meet with Microsoft founder and philanthropist Bill Gates on Wednesday, May 7, 2025 following an invitation that Gates extended in November last year.
According to Prabowo, the planned meeting will focus on Gates’ appreciation and support for Indonesia’s Free Nutritious Meals (Makan Bergizi Gratis/MBG) program − a flagship initiative of Prabowo’s administration aimed at improving child nutrition and reducing poverty.
“Bill Gates, a global figure, has asked to meet with me,” Prabowo said during a speech at the Cabinet Plenary Session at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Monday, May 5, 2025.
He emphasized that the purpose of the MBG program is not to seek foreign aid or praise. Instead, he described it as a long-term investment in the nation’s youth and a critical tool in combating poverty.
“I heard he [Gates] wants to express solidarity and may even offer support. I’m not sure in what form yet,” the president said.
Despite international recognition, Prabowo suggested that it is premature for Indonesia to accept any accolades. He noted that the program is still in its early stages and has not yet reached its target coverage.
“Let’s not celebrate just yet. We’re not successful − hopefully we will be by December 2025,” he said.
Prabowo, who is also Chairman of Gerindra Party, outlined that the program’s success would be measured by its ability to deliver clean, safe, and nutritious meals to 82.9 million people across the country.
“It’s only when we achieve that standard that we’ll be ready to accept congratulations,” Prabowo concluded.
