MAB expands EV production with new truck factory, strategic partnerships
Domestic car producer, Mobil Anak Bangsa (MAB) is accelerating its role in Indonesia's electric vehicle (EV) industry with plans to open a new factory dedicated to producing electric trucks.
This expansion marks a significant step for the local automaker as it targets the heavy-duty truck segment, with production and deliveries set to begin by September 2025.
“We're preparing a separate facility specifically for trucks. We aim to enter the heavy-duty truck market this year,” MAB President Director, Kelik Irwantono, said on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.
MAB will now operate two manufacturing sites − one in Pasuruan, East Java, for electric trucks, and another in Demak, Central Java, for non-truck EVs. The company already offers several electric truck models, such as the MT 8 Palm Oil Truck, MT 8 Truck Box, and MT 10 NF Sweeper, some of which are used for waste transport in cities including Jakarta and the new capital IKN.
EV lineup, collaborations
At the Periklindo Electric Vehicle Show (PEVS) 2025 in JIExpo Kemayoran, MAB not only demonstrated its full EV lineup but also launched two new electric motorcycle models − E-Rover and Delivery − designed to meet the growing demands of small businesses and daily logistics.
“These are ideal for food businesses, labs transporting samples, and more. The refrigerated compartment can reach temperatures as low as -22°C. We’re pricing these around Rp60 million (US$3,600),” Kelik said.
Both models feature liquid-cooled motors developed in collaboration with Luyuan, a pioneering Chinese EV motorcycle manufacturer. MAB’s General Manager, Winarto, highlighted the benefits: “Stable motor temperature, water and corrosion resistance, longer durability, and a five-year warranty.”
Large-scale production
In a landmark partnership, MAB has been entrusted by PT Safast Electric Vehicle Indonesia (SFEV) to produce 9,000 units of the SF T01 electric commercial vehicle over the next three years, with production starting in June 2025. The SF T01 is a versatile model that can serve as a pickup or box truck, aimed at logistics and cargo operations.
“This officially marks our entry into the commercial EV segment,” Kelik said. “Mini electric trucks will now complement our existing lineup of buses, trucks, and motorcycles.”
SFEV Director Tony Wang emphasized their shared commitment to green and intelligent mobility solutions: “We aim to provide cost-effective, smart electric commercial vehicles for the Indonesian market.”
Another major development is a pilot partnership with TIKI JNE, one of Indonesia’s largest logistics companies. Under the agreement, TIKI JNE will begin limited trials using MAB’s electric trucks for its delivery operations.
“JNE is exploring a transition to electric. If this trial is successful, they’re considering replacing part of their fleet,” Kelik cited.
TIKI JNE President Director Mohamad Feriadi Soeprapto, added, “We’ve supported eco-friendly operations since 2006, starting with electric two-wheelers. EVs offer clear efficiency advantages.”
Greener future
With strong interest from both domestic and international partners, MAB is determined to be a key driver in Indonesia’s transition to cleaner, more sustainable transportation. Its presence at PEVS 2025 also includes a range of electric vehicles on display − from trucks and box vans to military EVs and e-bikes.
Kelik emphasized the need for the nation’s education and industrial ecosystems to keep pace with EV technologies, noting China’s dominant role in battery and motor supply chains globally.
“Regardless of the brand, EV manufacturers source critical components from China. The mining might be elsewhere, but the tech still centers around China,” MAB executive, Puryanto, said.
