The Ministry of Communication and Digital Application (Komdigi) is reviewing cooperation in building a joint Artificial Intelligence (AI) center in ASEAN along with China, considered to be the largest in terms of cooperation in developing digital infrastructure.
"Cooperation in the field of digital infrastructure between Indonesia and China is the largest among cooperation with other countries," Minister of Communication and Digital Application Meutya V. Hafid said on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.
She, however, did not provide details of the total investment in Indonesia-China cooperation in the digital infrastructure sector nor the location of the AI Center construction.
"This collaboration has supported connectivity to remote areas of Indonesia through 4G and 5G technologies," Meutya cited.
The meeting on Tuesday also opened up great opportunities for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the agricultural sector and smart city development.
"We can learn from Nanning's experience in building a smart city. In addition, the great potential of digital startups and digital talents in Nanning can be an inspiration for the development of the digital ecosystem in Indonesia," she said.
Meutya said that the development of AI in Indonesia will be directed to support the agricultural sector. This is in line with President Subianto's vision of increasing food security.
"We are open to working with various countries, including China, in developing AI technology. Our target is to create nine million highly capable digital talents in the field of AI by 2030," she said.
Nong Shengwen, Party Secretary of Nanning City, China’s Guangxi Province, said that his agency is committed to strengthening relations between the two countries through technological innovation.
"We want to invite Indonesian companies to collaborate in developing AI technology in Nanning," he said.
Shengwen also emphasized Nanning's readiness to provide full support, including policies and facilities, to Indonesian companies wishing to cooperate.
"We hope to build an AI cooperation and innovation center between China and ASEAN in Indonesia, with full support from Komdigi," he said.
