State energy company PT Pertamina is making strategic efforts to reduce emissions by reducing methane exhaust gas from all lines of the company’s operations.

Salyadi Dariah Saputra, Director of Portfolio Strategy, and Business Development at Pertamina, said that the reduction of methane exhaust gas is included in one of the company’s sustainability focuses, namely addressing climate change.

“Pertamina is determined to become a leading energy company known for its concern for the environment, social responsibility, and strong governance. We have made significant steps in managing methane emissions to align with our sustainability goals,” Salyadi said on Thursday, November 28, 2024.

Efforts to reduce methane gas are carried out through an endorsement letter for the Zero Routine Flaring Initiative (ZRF).

Pertamina is committed to achieving ZRF by 2030, with a target of reducing methane emissions by 40 percent.

Recognizing the importance of collaboration in achieving the target, Pertamina has collaborated with major international organizations, including JOGMEC (Japan Oil, Gas, and Metals Corporation), and members of the ASEAN Petroleum Council.

Meanwhile, collaboration with USAID from the U.S. and technology provider Honeywell has also increased efforts to monitor and reduce methane emissions.

In addition, Pertamina is also collaborating with Petronas from Malaysia and PTT Exploration and Production Pcl (PTTEP) from Thailand in the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP2.0) and the Methane Leadership Program.

Meanwhile, Indonesia has set a carbon price policy to support the National Determined Contribution (NDC) target, with a target of 21.89 percent reduction by 2030.

“We balance economic, social and ecological resilience in the development path to maintain a balance between profit, community welfare, and environmental sustainability,” Yulia Suryanti, Director of Climate Change Mitigation at the Ministry of Environment, said on Thursday, November 28, 2024.
