PT Pertamina Hulu Energi Offshore North West Java (PHE ONWJ), a subsidiary of State energy company PT Pertamina, has managed to boost oil and gas production while simultaneously reducing the impact of environmental damage in Bravo and Echo Fields, offshore Java Sea, through the utilization of Extended Vacuum Entrainment (EVE) Ejector technology.

PHE ONWJ General Manager, Muzwir Wiratama, said the technology was developed to overcome operational challenges in the two oil and gas fields that are more than 40 years old.

“The main problem is the high volume of gas in the flow station that cannot be utilized due to low and unstable pressure, thus increasing the accumulation of flare gas,” Muzwir said in a statement as quoted on Thursday, January 2, 2025.

Flare gas, which is usually released by burning to control pressure, can now be reused with the help of EVE Ejector technology.

“With the EVE Ejector, the previously low flare gas pressure can be increased to the minimum processing limit,” he cited.

Different from conventional ejectors, the EVE Ejector functions to suck low-pressure gas for reuse. As a result, this technology is able to increase the stability of subsea pipeline pressure, reduce emissions, and provide significant added value for the company.

Positive impact

Since its first application in July 2023, PHE ONWJ has recorded a significant increase in efficiency. Within one year, this technology has succeeded in optimizing 6.6 million standard cubic meters of gas (MMSCF). In addition, the Bravo Field production increased by 153 barrels of oil per day (BOPD).

Environmental impact is also a major concern. This technology is able to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 447 tons equivalent per year, in line with Pertamina’s commitment to the net zero routine flaring target by 2030, as supported by the World Bank.

EVE Ejector technology has obtained a patent certificate from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights in December 2023 and was presented at an international forum, the Petroleum Engineers Society Workshop, in early 2024. Oil and gas companies from neighboring countries, such as Petronas (Malaysia) and PTTEP (Thailand), have expressed their appreciation for the technology innovated by Pertamina.

“Through EVE Ejector, PHE ONWJ proves that technological innovation is the key to an efficient, environmentally friendly, and sustainable energy future,” Muzwir said.

He hopes that this technology can be applied in other oil and gas fields in Indonesia to support production efficiency and national sustainability targets.
