The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in the past two years has prompted Indonesian banking customers to switch their activities to digital space, data from the Communication and Information Ministry show.

The banking sector is one of many which catches up with digital technology development. Many banks have offered applications where customers can access their accounts for financial activities.

Privately owned Bank OCBC NISP is one of them. Together with DailySocial.id, a startup news site, the bank launched a programming competition entitled OCBC NISP Hack@ON with the theme #GakPerluRibet Let’s Bank Differently.

The Hack@ON program is a technology-based innovation event, aiming to generate new banking experiences and invite technology talents to showcase their best ideas.

“In this era of open banking, we see opportunities for service acceleration and innovation, so we invite innovators and technology talents to take a role to innovate and make Indonesia #financiallyfit,” said Julie Anwar, Head of Human Resources Bank OCBC NISP.

“The cybersecurity is quite safe, the security is enough and monitoring is important to better bring fast innovation,” Mevira Munindra, International Data Corporation (IDC) Indonesia Country Manager, said, responding to possible data breach. “The data will be processed so that it is not used by other parties. There is a data processing process from raw data. Therefore, there is standardization from the government.”

The government is promoting Indonesia Emas (Golden Indonesia) 2045, which one of the goals is to promote public welfare with financial health benchmarks, including financial inclusion and financial literacy.

According to the e-Conomy SEA report by Google, Temasek and Bain & Company in 2019, 92 million of Indonesia’s adult population of 181 million are unbanked while 47 million are underbanked.

Registration for the OCBC NISP Hack@ON program is open from July 12 to September 4, 2022. Twenty participants will take part in the competition live on Hack Day on September 24 and 25, 2022, at ON Space, BSD City.

“Anybody interested in participating [in this event] should have a minimum age of 15. They can register as an individual or as a team with a max of three persons,” said Komang Artha Yasa, OCBC NISP Head of IT Division.

The bank will conduct roadshows in Bandung, Yogyakarta, Jakarta and Surabaya to promote the event. Three winners will receive a total prize of more than IDR200 million. Registration is available at https://hackathon.onelabs.co/
