The Indonesian Ministry of Industry asks manufacturing companies to embrace the principles of green industry in their production processes.
This initiative aims to promote more efficient and effective industrial processes, aligning industrial development with environmental sustainability.
Andi Rizaldi, Head of the National Standardization Agency and Industrial Service Policy (BSKJI), highlighted the numerous benefits of green industry, including cost reduction in operations, energy and water conservation, and the preservation of limited natural resources.
Additionally, green practices can minimize negative environmental impacts and contribute to ecosystem balance, fostering the development of environmentally friendly technologies.
In support of sustainable energy use, the government has enacted Regulation No. 33/2023 on Energy Conservation. This regulation emphasizes sustainable national energy availability through the adoption of efficient energy technologies and practices, promoting a culture of energy conservation.
Aligning with these regulations, the ministry of industry is backing the Boosting Energy Efficiency Practices for the Industrial Sector (BENEFITS) project. Managed by the Indonesian Institute for Energy Economics (IIEE) in collaboration with the Ministry’s Green Industry Center, BENEFITS aims to strengthen energy management implementation across industries, accelerating industrial decarbonization and energy transition.
The primary objective of the project is to establish an Energy Management System in five industries, reaching at least 70-80 percent readiness for ISO 50001 certification by the third year.
The project includes training for Energy Managers and Energy Auditors, providing technical assistance for Energy Management Systems (EnMS) in industrial sectors with energy consumption equivalent to or exceeding 4,000 TOE/year.
The BENEFITS project also emphasizes internal audit understanding and basic energy management for industries, encouraging long-term implementation and continuous improvement.
Didi Hasan Putra, Executive Director of the Indonesian Institute for Energy Economics, highlighted the project’s key activities, such as awareness training for 25 industries, Training of Trainer sessions for energy audit in 24 Technical Support Units within the Ministry of Industry, and a preliminary study of the Energy Consumption Index (IKE) in selected industries.
Apit Pria Nugraha, Head of the Ministry of Industry’s Green Industry Center, emphasized that the BENEFITS project aligns with the policies of industrial sector decarbonization and national energy conservation.
The effort is expected to contribute to improving industrial efficiency, enhancing industry competitiveness, increasing awareness of green industry standards, and supporting the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the industrial sector towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2060.
