Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Airlangga Hartarto, says that the government is considering nuclear energy collaboration with Russia to enhance domestic electricity availability and support Indonesia’s energy infrastructure development.
Airlangga discussed about nuclear energy cooperation during a recent meeting with Kiril Komarov, First Deputy CEO for Corporate Development and International Business at JSC Rosatom, in Moscow, Russia. He was in Moscow on June 10-12, 2024.
He highlighted Indonesia’s current focus on clean energy issues as part of its energy transition and invited Russia to collaborate on the development of renewable energy in Indonesia to achieve these goals.
“Nuclear energy can be an option to ensure electricity availability for the public without polluting the environment. Russia is also invited to cooperate in developing renewable energy in Indonesia,” Airlangga said on Wednesday, June 12, 2024.
Komarov affirmed Rosatom’s readiness to collaborate, emphasizing their extensive experience and capability to engage in comprehensive cooperation with Indonesia.
“Rosatom is prepared to contribute not only in the construction, but also in detailed socio-economic analysis,” he said.
During the visit, Airlangga also held a meeting with Andrey Slepnev, Minister of Trade of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC), discussing strategic economic and trade cooperation, including the acceleration of the Indonesia-Eurasian Economic Union Free Trade Agreement (Indonesia-EAEU FTA).
“Indonesia is pushing for the acceleration of the Indonesia-EAEU FTA negotiations, which is expected to benefit business actors in expanding their businesses to Eastern Europe and Central Asia,” he said.
