Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have agreed to strengthen collaboration in the energy and mineral resources sectors.

The agreement, signed by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Minister Bahlil Lahadalia and UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Suhail Mohammed Faraj Al Mazrouei, aims to promote technology transfer, policy exchange, business partnerships, project financing, and human resource development.

The partnership was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in the presence of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi on Saturday, November 23, 2024.

Bahlil emphasized the importance of this MoU in fostering deeper collaboration and strengthening the friendship between the two nations. Both countries will exchange knowledge and experience to support global advancements in the energy and mineral resource sectors.

“We believe that with strong synergy, Indonesia and the UAE can lead the transformation of global energy systems,” Bahlil said after the signing ceremony, on Saturday, November 23, 2024.

The agreement is expected to accelerate Indonesia’s energy sector development through innovative technology adoption and sustainable resource management. It will also open the avenues for joint business ventures, particularly in the mineral supply chain, midstream and downstream processing, and manufacturing.

The MoU outlines several focus areas, including:

  • Sharing knowledge on policies, strategies, and regulations;
  • Financing opportunities for projects such as carbon capture storage (CCS) and carbon capture utilization storage (CCUS);
  • Developing innovative technologies for biofuels and hydrogen energy;
  • Enhancing human resource capabilities in the energy sector.

Bahlil highlighted that this expanded cooperation aligns with Indonesia’s ambition to achieve net zero emissions by 2060. With support from the UAE, Indonesia aims to position itself as a key global player in sustainable energy.

“This collaboration not only strengthens our bilateral relations but also supports Indonesia’s vision for a sustainable future in the global energy landscape,” Bahlil concluded.
