President Prabowo Subianto reiterated the Indonesian government’s commitment to fight hunger and poverty during the recently concluded G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Addressing the first session of the Summit on Monday, November 18, 2024, Prabowo praised Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva for putting poverty and hunger as main focus of this year’s G20 Summit.

“We have the fourth biggest population in the world, so hunger and poverty for us are real daily issues,” Prabowo said as quoted in a statement on Wednesday, November 20, 2024.

He cited that the Indonesian government puts hunger and poverty countermeasures as national priority, while simultaneously allocating a huge fund for education.

“I believe education will bring us out of poverty. Free meals for children is also part of our strategy to make sure that our young generation can get the benefit of education,” he said.

The Indonesian president conveyed feasible plans to achieve food and energy security in Indonesia and expressed his optimism that his government could solve hunger issue in the next three years.

“We are striving to be independent in terms of energy in the next four years, and in five years we are confident we can contribute to the Global Alliance against Poverty and Hunger,” he said.

Apart from food and energy, President Prabowo also reiterated that global economy cannot be separated from geopolitic dynamic.

He, therefore, called for peaceful solution for ongoing global conflicts, including in Ukraine and Gaza, and encouraged member countries of the world’s 20 largest economies to strengthen multilateral collaboration in facing global challenges.

“We call for immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and Gaza. Only by peace and stability we can tackle poverty and hunger,” Prabowo reminded.

Accompanying President Prabowo in the Summit were Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto, Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.
