Jakarta − State oil and gas company PT Pertamina and Bakrie Group are collaborating to build the Nusantara Sustainability Hub in the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) meant for the International Institute of Sustainability Indonesia (IISI) to develop a world-class sustainable energy research centre and education facility.

The construction of the Nusantara Sustainability Hub began with the groundbreaking ceremony by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Wednesday, June 5, 2024. Present at the event were Acting Head of the Nusantara Capital City Authority Basuki Hadimuljono, Pertamina President Director Nicke Widyawati, CEO of Bakrie & Brothers Anindya Bakrie, President Director of Pertamina subsidiary PT Patra Jasa Ray S.M. Daulay, and President Director of Bakrie Center Foundation Jimmy Gani.

President Joko Widodo expressed his full support for partnerships with various international institutions that focus on sustainability, as an effort to open up the government in welcoming collaboration in the Nusantara capital city. The President’s presence was in connection with the signing of the Joint Statement of Collaboration signed at the Stanford University on cooperation plans in the field of research in the Indonesian sustainability sector in November 2023.

“I appreciate the construction of the Nusantara Sustainability Hub by Pertamina, in cooperation with Bakrie and other companies. It will be interesting to find out later that other companies, other universities, can work together here so that the hub becomes a showcase of our country’s research and development of a green economy in our country,” the President said in his remarks.

The collaboration between Pertamina and Bakrie Group includes the development of shared-hub infrastructure in IKN’s Edutown strategic area, as well as various researches that cover sustainability aspects, such as artificial intelligence-based critical mineral research to support the transformation of sustainable resource exploration. In this case, Pertamina also involves its portfolio subsidiary, PT Patra Jasa, which plays a role in developing the Nusantara Sustainability Hub.

Nicke Widyawati revealed that Pertamina through Patra Jasa will build the Nusantara Sustainability Hub in stages, to develop sustainability aspects in IKN, as well as present an international standard research and innovation center in the field of sustainability and low carbon technology.

“We hope that the Nusantara Sustainability Hub can become a forum for various initiatives, brainstorming activities, and sustainable development involving various parties. Ultimately, Pertamina seeks to realize environmentally friendly energy that will be utilized in IKN,” Nicke said.

Anindya Bakrie said that through partnership with the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, IISI will become the forerunner of the first sustainability school in Indonesia and play an important role in promoting the Nusantara Sustainability Hub as the Green Silicon Valley in Southeast Asia. IISI and the Nusantara Sustainability Hub are also expected to be part of Indonesia’s transformation journey not only from the physical side, but also the mindset, which can be a milestone for a new civilization in Indonesia, which is prosperous, just and sustainable.

“By exploring Indonesia’s partnership with the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, we will not only build an institute, but also an ecosystem that supports innovation, by leveraging the power of strong public-private partnerships through cooperation between Bakrie Group and other business groups, with Pertamina and the Nusantara Capital Authority to realize the vision of a Golden Indonesia 2045,” Anindya said.
