Countries in the Asia-Pacific region are beginning to address frequency spectrum for new technologies such as 6G and low earth orbit satellites like Starlink and OneWeb. The issue was discussed at the 10th Asia Pacific Spectrum Management Conference (APSMC) 2024.

Director-General of Resources and Equipment of Posts and Informatics (SDPPI) at the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, Ismail, said that many new wireless technology providers, consultants, regulators, and operators participated in the two-day conference to share best practices in managing 6G frequency spectrum and new satellite technologies.

“APSMC 2024 is expected to provide insights, ideas, and innovations for better spectrum management and the implementation of new technologies such as IMT-2030 (6G) and new satellite technologies,” Ismail said on Tuesday, April 23, 2024.

Previously, the results of the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC) 2023 decided that Indonesia could deploy 5G and 6G in the 7 GHz frequency spectrum. There is a 100 MHz-wide band in the range of 7,025-7,125 MHz that can be used for both new technologies. Furthermore, the WRC 2023 also decided that Indonesia would receive two new allocations for Radiolocation Services and Mobile Service.

According to Mobile World Live, researchers from Nokia Bell Labs and Ericsson stated that the availability of spectrum in the centimeter range between 7GHz and 15GHz is crucial for 6G to fulfill its potential.

Ismail added that APSMC 2024 would also be beneficial for planning in developing the ICT Infrastructure Roadmap, Spectrum Roadmap for Mobile Broadband and Satellite to provide availability and coverage of Broadband services to underserved areas and improve Broadband service quality in Indonesia. Also, to prepare the national industry towards the Vision of Indonesia Digital 2045.

Sarwoto Atmosutarno, Chairman of the Indonesian Telematics Society (Mastel), said the conference would be beneficial for all stakeholders and continue to drive the Telecommunications industry ecosystem in Indonesia to complete the implementation of 5G.

Meanwhile, Adiwijaya, Rector of Telkom University, said that APSMC 2024 would be a platform for stakeholders in the telecommunications industry, regulatory bodies, and academia to discuss and collaborate on current challenges, opportunities, and trends in spectrum management in the Asia-Pacific. “By sharing knowledge and experiences, we can better understand optimizing spectrum usage to support economic growth, technological innovation, and improving
