State electricity company PT PLN continues to undertake digital-based corporate transformation and development of electricity system technology in line with energy transition measures among others through the development of Joint Innovation Center (JIC) in collaboration with PT Huawei Tech Investment.

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo praises the progress and innovation made by JIC in responding to the digitization needs of PLN since its inauguration in November 2023, calling the cooperation as a milestone in how the global community unites to fight the climate change crisis.

“The JIC is intended to map every technical, strategic, operational and investment challenge. In this way, every challenge can be overcome, can be mitigated, and can be managed so that we can move forward and achieve the mission of energy transition,” Darmawan said on Thursday, April 25, 2024.

He cited that since its establishment five months ago, the JIC has contributed for the success of several pilot projects, including Internet of Things (IoT) technology in the distribution network called Intelligence Distribution Solution (IDS) combined with One Fiber Multi-Services (1FMS). In the future, JIC will also develop smart inspection of transmission networks, digital network operations, and increase human resources who master the latest technology.

Darmawan said further that JIC’s existence will also support the Accelerated Renewable Energy Development (ARED) scheme in order to accelerate the energy transition. Through ARED, PLN builds a reliable electricity system equipped with a smart grid to integrate generation, transmission, distribution and customer service systems.

“With the smart grid, we can harmonise the operation of energy storage systems in the form of batteries as base-load to deal with the challenges of intermittency of new renewable energy (EBT). It also enables the delivery of electricity from renewable sources from very remote locations to the demand center,” Darmawan said.

Meanwhile, Huawei’s Vice President & CEO of Power Digitalization, David Sun, hopes that various achievements of the JIC can be useful for the Indonesian electricity industry, especially PLN.

“One of the technologies that we bring in this collaboration is the development of 1FMS, which we believe will become a world-class benchmark in the future,” David said.
