State-owned oil and gas compamny Pertamina is currently focusing on completing the Balikpapan Refinery Development Master Plan (RDMP), with its Turn Around (TA) Revamp program which is targeted for completion in early May 2024.

Pertamina President Director Nicke Widyawati said during a visit to the Balikpapan RDMP project on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, that the TA Revamp program aims to integrate the existing refinery unit with the new refinery unit resulting from the implementation of the RDMP project.

The success of the Balikpapan RDMP project will increase the production capacity of the Balikpapan Refinery by 100 thousand barrels per day, which means that the production capacity of the Balikpapan Refinery will be 360 thousand barrels per day from the initial capacity of 260 thousand barrels per day.

“We all pray and fully support that the revamping process, which is an important milestone of this RDMP project to increase capacity, will run smoothly,” Nicke said.

Nicke said further that it is not easy to build a project of this size and complexity, but Pertamina through PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional and the entire team involved have proven that through full commitment and strong cooperation, they can overcome the challenges.

“We are committed to completing this project because it has been eagerly awaited by all Indonesian people. This project will provide great added value to the Indonesian economy,” she said.

When the Balikpapan RDMP is completed, it will become the largest oil refinery in Indonesia. This is because the capacity of the Balikpapan Refinery will exceed the one of the Cilacap Refinery, which is currently the country’s largest.

Currently, the Cilacap Refinery processes 345 thousand barrels of oil per day (bpd). Meanwhile, the Balikpapan refinery is expected to be able to process 360,000 bpd of crude oil. In addition to increasing oil processing capacity, there will be additional production of petrochemical products of up to 225 thousand tons per year.

Pertamina is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuing to encourage programs that have direct impact on the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). All of these efforts are in line with the implementation of Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) in all Pertamina’s business lines and operations.
