PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan (PHR) has announced the discovery of potential oil and gas reserves in the existing field of the Rokan Block in Rokan Hulu Regency, Riau Province.

“This discovery is a commitment from the company to extend the life of the Rokan Working Area (WK) through exploration activities with the application of new studies and concepts,” said Edwil Suzandi, Executive Vice President for Upstream Business of PHR Rokan Working Area, on Thursday, Dec. 28, 2023.

According to Edwil, PHR Rokan WK’s exploration, with the support of Pertamina’s upstream sub-holding and the Upstream Oil and gas Regulatory Task Force (SKK Migas), continues to conduct studies and innovations to increase production in the Rokan Block, including studying the potential of shallow exploration targets.

One of these studies involves the Telisa WK Rokan reservoir potential, which is part of the commitment to work on the Rokan WK in 2022.

“Currently, PHR Rokan WK’s average production is around 160 thousand barrels of oil per day (BOPD) from assets covering approximately 6,400 square meters. PHR is quickly seeking new resources and reserves in the most productive working area in Indonesia,” Edwil said.

The company is focused on implementing new concepts and technologies in existing areas. It aims to predict risks and uncertainties more quickly for new reserve discoveries in mature working areas. Mature oil fields are considered attractive in uncertain times due to regular and reliable investments.

“For this reason, the PHR Rokan WK exploration team is re-evaluating all subsurface aspects (geology, geophysics, and reservoir) in existing areas by optimizing previous seismic and well log data through a new subsurface interpretation concept,” he said.

In addition, PHR is applying new concepts and understanding for the oil generation, accumulation, and trapping system (petroleum system).

This method has added approximately 350 million barrels of oil to the exploration resource portfolio in the Telisa formation. It has achieved efficiency without significant exploration investment costs through well drilling.

Other exploration discoveries that are currently in maturation and evaluation include the potential reservoirs of Petani, Pematang, and Basement.

Edwil said these discoveries demonstrated that, despite being a relatively mature hydrocarbon region, the Rokan Block still has significant exploration potential.

“This discovery has had a very positive impact on the target of finding new resources in Rokan,” he said.

Edwil mentioned that the plan is to soon transfer the volume of these new resources from the PHR Exploration team to the PHR Development team for production. This aims to increase gas production, ensuring a sustainable national energy supply.
