The Ministry of Communication and Informatics is set to build the Satria-2 satellite with a capacity of 300 Gbps, entirely funded by foreign investment.

According to the Telecommunication and Information Accessibility Agency (BAKTI) of the ministry, the funding will be 100 percent sourced from foreign investment.

President Director of BAKTI, Fadhilah Mathar, said the construction of Satria-2 will utilize foreign loans with a target investment of US$ 860 million (IDR 13 trillion).

“We expect the Satria-2 satellite to enter the Green book stage for foreign loans or grants this year,” Fadhillah said on March 8, 2024.

Currently, the development of the Satria-2 satellite is still in the technical discussion stage with the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) and the Ministry of Finance.

The Ministry of Communication and Informatics, however, has not yet decided whether the Satria-2 satellite will be a Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) or Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite.

The internet function of Satria-2 will be utilized for facilities such as schools, hospitals and health centers, government offices, security and defense facilities, as well as tourist areas and productive sectors.

The procurement process for the Satria-2 satellite is targeted to begin in 2025. Previously, the ministry launched the Satria-1 satellite with a capacity of 150 Gbps in June 2023.

The Satria-1 satellite was initially available in areas inaccessible by terrestrial technology. Meanwhile, Satria-2 will reach locations inaccessible by fiber optic or microwave technology.

The development of the Satria-2 satellite will follow the orbit scheme of Satria-1, which is not provided by the government but rather by the winner of the tender. Previously, the Satria-1 satellite was prepared by a satellite company named Satelit Nusantara Tiga (SNT).
