Indonesia to boost electricity capacity focusing on renewable energy, nuclear power

The President Prabowo Subianto administration has plans to increase electricity capacity by 103 gigawatts (GW) in 15 years, some 75 GW of which will come from new and renewable energy plants, 5 GW from nuclear power plants, and the rest from gas-powered plants.

According to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), the total installed capacity of national electricity plants is currently still oversupplied by 91 GW until the end of 2023, with the capacity from new and renewable energy plants less than 15 percent, i.e. 13.5 GW.

This increase in electricity capacity is triggered by the increased demand of electricity for economic development of more than twice as much as now and the desire to balance the amount of electricity supply from solar energy and new renewable energy for climate commitments with a portion of 50:50 in 2040.

In addition, the Prabowo administration is also targeting the economy to grow by eight percent per year, higher than the initial estimate of 5 percent.

“Indonesia will achieve cheap and clean energy while accelerating the economy to grow by at least 8 percent,” Hashim Djojohadikusumo, Special Envoy of President Prabowo Subianto, told the COP29 climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Monday, November 11, 2024.

The government promises to expand the national economic capacity, increase employment, reduce poverty, and welfare for the community while protecting the environment.
