The Jawa-1 Gas Steam Power Plant (PLTGU) with a capacity of 1760 MW is ready to operate in full swing after undergoing a series of tests such as plant reliability run & net dependable capacity test.

CEO of Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (NRE) John Anis expressed his appreciation to all management and officers of PT Jawa Satu Power (JSP) for their dedication and extraordinary hard work in completing this mega project. “Support from all parties is continuously expected so that the Jawa-1 PLTGU can demonstrate operational excellence and bring optimal benefits to Pertamina and the Republic of Indonesia,” John said in his statement on Saturday, March 30, 2024.

John added that with all its unique installations, the Jawa-1 PLTGU could become one of the pillars of energy transition that Pertamina and Indonesia can be proud of.

Pertamina NRE, he said, is strongly committed to fulfilling the mandate of realizing national energy security, as well as conducting a fair and sustainable energy transition through the development of new and renewable low-carbon energy technologies to achieve Net Zero Emission by 2060.

“Pertamina NRE is also ready to expand its wings globally by projecting expansion into foreign markets,” he said.

On the other hand, President Director of JSP Asistia Semiawan expressed gratitude for the support of all parties and other stakeholders who continuously provide trust in this project. “We have completed the formal administrative process and requirements; hopefully, everything goes smoothly so that we can contribute to supporting electricity supply through collaboration with our strategic partner, PLN,” he said.

Furthermore, Vice President of Corporate Communication at Pertamina Fadjar Djoko Santoso revealed that the successful readiness of the Jawa-1 PLTGU marks a significant milestone in Indonesia’s energy transition. “The Jawa-1 PLTGU, a result of synergy between SOEs and partners, shows that achieving NZE will be faster with the support of all parties. We hope this project will drive various other strategic energy transition projects,” Fadjar said.

The Jawa-1 PLTGU is managed by JSP, owned by a consortium between Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) with a 40 percent ownership, Marubeni 40 percent, and Sojitz 20 percent. The Jawa-1 PLTGU is a power plant that integrates a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) with a 1760 MW capacity power generation unit consisting of 2 power units, each with a capacity of 880 MW. Unit 2 has been in commercial operation since December 2023.

This project connects the availability of gas supply in Papua with the electricity needs in Java and Bali. By using liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a fuel source, the greenhouse gas emissions produced are lower compared to coal-fired or petroleum-fired power plants. This is in line with efforts to reduce carbon emissions from the electricity sector.

Additionally, this power plant utilizes a closed-loop cooling tower system technology to improve reliability and reduce the volume of seawater usage in supporting plant operations. The operation of the Jawa-1 PLTGU will be a significant achievement for Pertamina and will further add to its portfolio of clean energy utilization in Pertamina’s business. Natural gas plays a strategically important role in the energy transition period, where it will also support national energy security, and its low emissions categorize it as clean energy.
