PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS), a subsidiary of State energy company PT Pertamina, extends support on the government’s program for the application of B40 in shipping transportation, having operated biodiesel-fueled 189 tankers since January 2025 for national energy distribution.
“In accordance with the direction of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), all ships operated by PIS have used B40. This is part of the efforts to achieve energy security while supporting green and sustainable energy,” PIS Fleet Director, Muhammad Irfan Zainul Fikri, said on Thursday, February 6, 2025.
The use of B40 is part of the national energy transition strategy aimed at reducing carbon emissions. B40 biodiesel is a type of biofuel that consists of 40 percent bio-based materials, specifically palm oil, and 60 percent diesel fuel.
Since its introduction, B40 has shown high efficiency in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, making it a greener solution for the shipping sector. This measure also supports PIS’s vision to support government’s to achieve the Net Zero Emission (NZE) target by 2050.
In addition to using B40, PIS also implements various green technology innovations, such as Energy Saving Devices (ESD) and Dual-Fuel Technology, which allows ships to use alternative and fossil fuels alternately or simultaneously, with savings of up to 30 percent of the ship’s total fuel consumption.
In the medium term, PIS targets the contribution of green business to increase to 34 percent by 2034 and reduce emissions by 32 percent in line with the commitments of Indonesia and the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
“In the future, we hope that PIS can become a leading player in the green shipping industry. For this, close collaboration between stakeholders and regulators is needed to create a truly environmentally friendly shipping industry ecosystem,” Irfan concluded.
