The annual joint military exercise 2024 Super Garuda Shield began on Monday, August 26, 2024 folowing the opening ceremony co-presided by Deputy Commander of the Military Education and Training Command Rear Marshal Widyanto Ikoputra and Chief of Staff and Commander of the Hawaii Air National Guard (HIANG) Major General Joseph R. Harris II, at the Operation Base of Juanda Air Base, East Java.
Joseph R. Harris II said in his address that all participants should take advantage of the excellent opportunities provided for professional and cultural exchanges that will strengthen the partnerships through shared learning and training challenges.
“I encourage all participants to use this opportunity to develop and grow relationships with your counterparts that will last a lifetime,” he said.
He cited that the Super Garuda Shield began in 2007 as a bilateral Army service to service exercise and since then has evolved into a world class joint/multinational event designed to enhance collective capabilities. The Super Garuda Shield 2024, which will last until September 6, 2024, will consist of expert academic exchanges, professional development workshops, a command-and-control exercise, and a combined and joint field training exercise that culminates with a live fire event.
Thousands of army, air force, and navy personnel of friendly nations in the Indo Pacific region, including Indonesia as the host, the US, Australia, Japan, Singapore, UK, Thailand, South Korea, French, and New Zealand, participate in this year’s joint military exercise. Meanwhile, Canada, Brazil, Malaysia, the Philippine, the Dutch, Papua New Guinea, Brunei Darusalam, Saudi Arabia, India and Timor Leste come as observers.
The joint military exercise, which will be held in Surabaya and Situbondo in East Java, Jakarta and Baturaja in South Sumatra, is organized by the Marine Combat Training Center in Karang Telok, Banongan Beach; Batu Raja Army Combat Training Center and Brawijaya Command Area Training Center in Palagan village.
The 2024 Garuda Shield Joint Exercise consists of materials about decision making procedures; leadership and operational instruction; Cyberex or materials about identifying, securing, defending from cyber threats; Airborne operation; cargo delivery system; joint strike; jungle FTX (Field Training Exercise); special operation force (SOF); air assault; amphibious operation; and engineer civil action exercise (CALFEX).
