Pertamina Hulu Rokan (PHR), a subsidiary of State energy company PT Pertamina,  has shown significant progress in the development of Unconventional Oil and Gas (MNK) project in the Rokan Working Area (WK) is support the national energy production target achievement.

One of the main achievements is the success of the main fracturing process at the Gulamo DET-1 Well, which indicates the flow of oil and gas hydrocarbons.

PHR Executive Vice President for Upstream Business, Andre Wijanarko, said that the initial results of the hydrocarbon flow test or flowback test showed positive signs of the Brownshale formation in the Gulamo Well.

“This achievement is an important step in proving the potential of MNK in the Rokan WK,” Andre said in a statement as quoted on Monday, October 28, 2024.

PHR remains optimistic that the MNK project in Rokan will continue to develop according to plan, with economic evaluations that continue to be updated as data becomes more complete.

Andre expressed his confidence that the new information from the Gulamo Well will strengthen the accuracy of the economic analysis of the MNK project.

Head of the SKK Migas Program and Communication Division, Hudi D. Suryodipuro, praised the positive development and said that the fracturing technology applied in Gulamo has great potential to support national energy security.

“The success of fracturing technology in the MNK Gulamo project is an important step for further implementation in other MNK fields,” Hudi said.

The first drilling of the Gulamo Well was carried out on July 27, 2023. The MNK exploration activity is a collaboration with a U.S. oil and gas exploration company, EOG Resources International.

Based on the results of testing by the United States Energy Information Administration (EIA) in 2013, the potential for MNK in five basins in Indonesia contains in-place oil and gas resources of 234 billion barrels of oil (BBO) and 303 trillion cubic feet (TCF), respectively.

One of the potential MNK resources is in the Central Sumatra Basin, where the Rokan Block managed by PHR is part of the basin.

i-WISE technology

Andre cited that PHR continues to strive to increase oil production and optimize process efficiency in the Rokan Block through innovative technology.

“Young people at PHR have succeeded in creating i-WISE (Integrated-Waterflood & Infill Simplified Evaluator) technology, a digital platform that is able to carry out fast and accurate evaluations to determine the right field candidates for the application of the waterflood method,” he said.

The first project to use results of the i-WISE analysis is the Pager field in Rokan Hilir, which began implementing the waterflood method in late 2023. The results showed a significant increase of 1,180 barrels per day (BOPD), or around 42 percent higher than the previous total production, resulting in added value of 29 billion rupiah.

“This production figure is equivalent to the Pager field production dozens of years ago,” Andre said.

In addition to increasing production, i-WISE technology is also able to reduce the time for evaluating candidates for waterflood by up to nine months faster than conventional methods. This technology also plays a role in reducing the amount of water produced from the facility, optimizing the use of idle wells as injector wells, and saving resources.

The waterflood method, which injects water into the reservoir to increase pressure and maximize oil recovery, is very effective but requires complex field analysis. i-WISE is present as an innovative solution that simplifies and accelerates the process.
