The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) invites United Arab Emirates-based energy company Masdar alongside other investors to participate in the development of solar power plants (PLTS) in the new capital Nusantara (IKN), East Kalimantan.

Masdar energy company recently took significant strides with a large-scale floating solar power project at Cirata Reservoir in West Java.

Eniya Listiani Dewi, Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) at the ESDM ministry, emphasized the government’s inclusive approach during the Katadata Sustainability Action For The Future Economy (SAFE) 2024 event in Jakarta on Thursday, August 8, 2024.

“We invite all companies interested in investing in PLTS development in the new capital Nusantara and other areas,” Eniya said.

PLN, Indonesia’s state-owned electricity company, has outlined plans to construct a 50-megawatt (MW) PLTS to support the electricity needs in IKN.

She cited that 10 MW of electricity generation has been completed, while the remaining 40 MW is expected to be operational by October or December of this year.

Minister of Public Works and Housing (PUPR) and Acting Head of the Nusantara Capital Authority, Basuki Hadimuljono, confirmed that Masdar is conducting a feasibility study for a floating solar power plant in IKN.

“From the energy sector, I just met with Masdar yesterday, and they are currently in the feasibility study stage,” Basuki said on August 6, 2024.

Once the feasibility study by Masdar is approved, the project will proceed to a tender process, with Masdar serving as the initiator.

“However, the project must go through a tender process, with Masdar as the initiator,” Basuki said.

Masdar has previously expressed commitment to contribute to the mega project in Nusantara by developing a 200 MW floating solar power plant. This initiative is part of the company’s broader commitment to establishing 2 GW of renewable energy in the region.

The collaboration was officially marked by the issuance of a Letter to Proceed (LtP) for the feasibility study at IKN by Agung Wicaksono, Deputy for Funding and Investment at the Nusantara Capital Authority, to Abdulla Zayed, Masdar’s Director of Development & Investment, on May 21, 2024.
