Wuling Indonesia is exploring to expand its electric vehicle (EV) exports to Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, and South Africa. The plan was revealed during a meeting between Indonesian Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita and executives from SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Co., Ltd in Beijing on Tuesday, June 18, 2024.
Shi Guoyong, President Director of PT SGMW Motor Indonesia, noted that Wuling has invested over US$700 million in Indonesia during its seven years of operation. This investment has reached approximately 130,000 buyers and facilitated exports to Thailand.
“Wuling is also the first factory to produce electric cars in Indonesia, achieving a domestic component level of 40 percent,” Shi said as quoted from the official statement of the Ministry of Industry.
Shi emphasized that the support and incentives provided by the Indonesian government have enabled smooth investments. Currently, Wuling is capable of producing three types of electric vehicles in Indonesia.
Looking ahead, Wuling Indonesia plans to expand its market to Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, and South Africa. Additionally, the company intends to produce a seven-seater MPV electric vehicle. Wuling is also working to enhance its electric vehicle supply chain by attracting several Chinese companies to invest in Indonesia.
“We prioritize the development of electric vehicles, especially by launching high-quality, high-tech products for both the Wuling and MG brands,” he said.
Wuling Indonesia also announced that one of its stakeholders, SAIC Co., is the producer of MG vehicles. The company is looking to increase its investment by adding the MG brand to Wuling’s electric vehicle production lineup.
Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita encouraged Wuling, one of the first EV manufacturers in Indonesia, to boost its production in the country. He also supported Wuling’s initiative to make Indonesia a manufacturing hub for exports.
“We appreciate Wuling making Indonesia its only EV manufacturing facility outside of China,” Agus said.
He noted the rapid development of Wuling’s EV production in Indonesia, highlighting the company’s significant contributions to the country’s EV industry.
Agus addressed two key points regarding Wuling’s business development. First, he urged Wuling to increase and optimize its production capacity in Indonesia.
“We believe Wuling’s development in Indonesia should not stop here. The extraordinary potential provided by Wuling can be further developed or utilized in Indonesia,” the minister stated.
Second, Agus encouraged Wuling to establish Indonesia as a hub for exporting its manufactured products worldwide, to meet global market demands comprehensively.
