In a decisive move towards environmental sustainability, PT Pertamina (Persero) and the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) have announced a collaboration.
Both entities’ joint venture aims to evaluate and track methane emissions at natural gas extraction sites in Indonesia, underscoring their commitment to greener energy and reducing carbon footprints.
Measuring methane and carbon emission
Central to this partnership is the initiation of projects to measure methane emissions and gauge the carbon intensity of production activities.
This aims to formulate a robust system for managing methane emissions effectively. The pilot phase will be rolled out in Pertamina’s operations in Donggi Matindok and the Joint Operating Body Tomori (JOB Tomori) in Central Sulawesi Province.
The collaboration’s official Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was inked by A. Salyadi Saputra, Pertamina’s Director of Strategy, Portfolio, and New Ventures, and Asawa Satoshi, JOGMEC’s Executive Vice President of the Energy Business Unit.
The landmark agreement was unveiled at the ASEAN-Japan Economic Co-Creation Forum, with subsequent deliberations at the ASEAN Methane Leadership Program held on December 16th.
Highlighting dangers of methane for the environment
Highlighting the pressing nature of the issue, Salyadi pointed out the alarming global warming potential of methane, which is 28 times greater than CO2.
“Accurate quantification of methane emissions is vital,” he remarked, underlining Pertamina’s ambition to align with global methane management standards and the pivotal role of partners like JOGMEC.
JOGMEC’s Satoshi echoed the sentiment, expressing optimism about enhancing the cleanliness of energy resources from the targeted Indonesian fields destined for Japan.
“This collaboration is a step forward in our carbon-neutral journey,” he affirmed. The MoU’s signing at the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Leaders Meeting underscores the shared commitment of both entities.
Further discussions at the AZEC platform, held on December 18th, saw Prime Ministers from AZEC partner nations delve into potential collaborative ventures.
Concurrently, the ASEAN-Japan Economic Co-Creation Forum deliberated on fostering meaningful AZEC projects, with a spotlight on decarbonization and energy transition initiatives.
