President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo inaugurated the Tangguh Train 3 National Strategic Project (PSN) in Teluk Bintuni regency, West Papua province, on November 24, 2023. The newly inaugurated facility is poised to enhance Tangguh’s annual LNG production to an impressive 11.4 million tonnes.
“It also significantly contributes to supporting the daily target gas production of 12 billion cubic feet by 2030,” emphasized President Jokowi.
This development marks a crucial step towards Indonesia’s energy goals and reinforces its position in the global LNG market.
The Tangguh Train project, with an investment value of US$ 4.83 billion or IDR 72.45 trillion, is not only a substantial economic investment but also promises a positive impact on employment.
The President highlighted the expectation that the project would create job opportunities for domestic workers, particularly those from West Papua, including Papuan workers.
“I am pleased to announce that, as of today, 70 percent of Tangguh’s operational workforce comprises employees from West Papua and Papua provinces,” President Jokowi announced proudly.
Looking ahead, he expressed his support for Tangguh LNG’s ambitious target – to have 85% of its operational workforce composed of Papuans by 2029.
President Jokowi shared inspiring stories of success, revealing that 105 operations and maintenance technicians at the LNG plant were individuals from West Papua and Indonesia.
These individuals, recruited since high school, successfully completed education programs facilitated by the UK-based oil producer BP in Berau.
Highlighting the broader impact on the region, President Jokowi announced plans for various upstream oil and gas projects and their derivatives in West Papua.
These include the Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) Ubadari, the blue ammonia downstreaming project, as well as the Asap, Kido, and Merah (AKM) Field projects.
The inauguration of Tangguh Train 3 stands as a testament to Indonesia’s commitment to advancing its energy sector, fostering regional development, and empowering local communities.
The project’s success sets a positive trajectory for the nation’s energy landscape, bolstering confidence in its capability to meet future energy demands.
