PT Hyundai Energy Indonesia held a groundbreaking ceremony for its electric vehicle assembly plant located in the Greenland International Industrial Center (GIIC) in Cikarang Bekasi Regency on Wednesday (31/5). The plant is scheduled to start operations in March 2024.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by the South Korean Ambassador to Indonesia, Lee Sang Deok, and the board of directors of PT Hyundai Energy Indonesia.

Production goals and expansion plans

Hyundai Energy aims to produce 21,000 units of battery system assembly (BSA) per year. With an initial investment of US$60 million, the company plans to scale up production to 50,000 BSA units in the subsequent year.

The plant will manufacture batteries with a capacity of 65 kWh, incorporating advanced features such as battery control devices, safety mechanisms, and protection systems.

Operating with one production line and two modules, the plant will have a production capacity of 1.4 GWh until 2024.

Hyundai, however, has ambitious plans to expand its production capabilities. In the near future, the South Korean automaker intends to introduce an additional production line, boosting the overall production capacity to 5 GWh.

Indonesia as Hyundai’s battery production hub in ASEAN

Hyundai Energy President Director Changoug Hong said that the establishment of the electric vehicle battery assembly plant in Indonesia solidifies the country’s role as the primary hub for Hyundai Motor Group’s electric vehicle battery production in the ASEAN region.

Spread across an area of 32,188 square meter, the battery plant will serve as the production hub for battery systems specifically designed for locally manufactured battery electric vehicle (BEV) models.

These products are expected to penetrate the Southeast Asian market by 2024. The components will be optimized with two types of battery cells: standard capacity and large capacity, enabling longer driving ranges.

Hyundai Motor Group has also engaged Hyundai Mobis, a company specializing in global automotive electrification. Hyundai Mobis will provide EV PE (Power Electric System), which serves as the cornerstone of electric vehicle technology.
