The National Cyber and Encryption Agency (BSSN) has selected French cyber security tech company Thales as its partner to optimize cyber security in the Indonesian digital sector.

BSSN and Thales cooperates in cyber security

BSSN and Thales previously signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in the first quarter of 2023 to secure Indonesia’s internet industry.

The MoU was signed by Hinsa Siburian, the Head of BSSN, and Nicolas Bouverot, Vice-President of Thales Asia.

Hinsa said that the MoU signing is in line with the directive of the National Cyber Security Strategy (SKSN), which emphasizes strengthening collaboration with private cyber security companies.

Stakeholders involved in the SKSN include government administrators, businesses, academician, and the general public.

“With support from Thales, we hope to develop solutions that will assist Indonesia in achieving national cyber sovereignty,” said Hinsa, on May 23, 2023.

Thales actively engages in all stages of the cyber security value chain, offering comprehensive solutions that encompass risk assessment and the protection of critical infrastructure.

The industry highly regards the company’s capabilities in detecting and responding to cyber threats.

Products and services under the agreement

Thales’ structured solutions consist of three products and services, which are as follows

  • Cyber security services, including risk assessment, training and simulation, as well as detection and response to cyber-attacks;
  • Encryption devices and sensors to safeguard crucial information systems;
  • Data security platforms, identity and access management as a service, and broader cloud protection and licensing offerings;

Cyber security development

In 2022, Indonesia implemented the Personal Data Protection Act (UU PDP), which draws inspiration from EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, as an effort to improve the company’s cyber security.

By 2023, the National Cyber Security Index (NCSI) report reported that Indonesia ranks 47th with 63.64 points, while the United States ranks 44th with 64.94 points, and the Philippines ranks 46th with 63.64 points.

Currently, BSSN plays a crucial role in overseeing and strengthening Indonesia’s cyber security as its primary cyber and signal intelligence agency.

Bouverot appreciates the collaboration with BSSN to further fortify Thales’ existing cyber security foundations in Indonesia.

He emphasizes the need for Indonesian companies, governments, and institutions to ensure the resilience of their systems against cyber attacks.

Bouverot also confirms Thales’ readiness to support Indonesia in achieving cyber sovereignty by improving and developing the country’s cyber security capabilities.

“Accompanied by our local partners, we are committed to ensuring the success of our collaboration with BSSN,” stated Bouverot.
