Bersama Digital Infrastructure Asia Pte Ltd (BDIA), a Singapore-based joint venture company between Provident, Saratoga and Macquarie Asset Management, announced their plan to establish the Bersama Digital Data Center (BDDC) in Indonesia.

The project is aimed at providing a data center with 60 Megawatts capacity within the span of three to four years. The estimated capital for the project is said to be at US$ 600 million (IDR 8.8 billion).

The BDCC is a data center platform that serves as a center of interconnectivity with an integrated digital ecosystem.

Meanwhile, a data center is a facility that specifically stores data from hundreds to thousands of servers. Having a localized data center in Indonesia will allow digital service providers to improve time and cost efficiency, boost high security, create faster network, reduced downtime, which can translate to lower e-commerce losses, and low latency which can help faster flow of infoermation.

Opportunities in weaknesses

The data center project is intended as a strategic effort by Bersama Digital Infrastructure Asia (BDIA) to expedite the fulfillment of digital infrastructure needs in various Indonesian sectors. Indonesia itself has been experiencing rapid growth of the internet in the last 4 years.

However, lack of data centers is one of the obstacles of developing reliable digital services. In Indonesia, data center penetration rate is recorded at 0.3 Watt (W) per capita in Asia Pacific. This condition provides an opportunity for BDIA to step in and provide assistance.

Muhammad Arif, Chairman of the Association of Indonesian Internet Service Providers (APJII) said that the presence of BDDC will strengthen the data center industry in Indonesia going forward.

“Our hope is that the presence of BDDC will continue to encourage Indonesia’s digitization process to be more efficient and help accelerate national economic growth and be able to have a wider impact on various regions in Indonesia,” said Setyanto Hantoro, President Commissioner of Bersama Digital Data Centers (BDDC).
