The shooting incident occurred at the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) office in Central Jakarta on May 2, 2023. The perpetrator was reportedly killed, leaving two people injured.

“That’s right [there was a shooting]. The perpetrator died,” said Commissioner Komarudin, Head of the Central Jakarta Metro Resort Police, as reported on May 2, 2023.

Reports stated that there was one perpetrator, and that two MUI employees were injured by broken glass, and bullet shrapnel. The perpetrator was a 60-year-old man domiciled in Lampung. The police however, is still attempting to confirm the identity of the man and the cause of death. An official investigation is underway.

The MUI office building was reportedly damaged, with office glass scattered because of the attack.

The Police said that the perpetrator used an airsoft gun. “We are still investigating for a while. Now we are processing the crime scene, examining witnesses, and so on,” said Komarudin.

Shortly after the shooting, according to Masduki Baidlowi, Head of the Information and Communication Division of the MUI, the area of the MUI office building had been secured with tighter security.

So far, the building has always been maintained in accordance with applicable procedures and standards. “Security at the MUI has been normal so far, it’s just standard. It’s standard procedure because there really isn’t anything wrong with it, it’s normal,” said Badlowi.

Badlowi added that the level of security does not need to be tightened. “There is no need for additional [security], but if we can increase the discipline of the security, maybe coordination with the police can be more intensive,” added Badlowi.

Badlowi explained that there were no special instructions from Ma’aruf Amin regarding the shooting.

Meanwhile, Arif Fahrudin, Deputy Secretary General of the MUI for the Da’wah Center and Improvement of Nation’s Morals, said that the perpetrator had visited the office and sent letters to the MUI at least twice.
