Indonesian-Russian navies hold 3rd Navy-to-Navy Talks in Russia

The Indonesian Navy and its Russian counterpart held the 3rd Navy-to-Navy Talks (NTNT) at the Central Naval Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia, on December 19, 2024.

Assistant for Military Operations to the Navy Chief of Staff, Rear Admiral Yayan Sofiyan, said in his remarks that this bilateral forum is meant to increase mutual trust and good relations between the two navies, marking the collaboration that has been established since 2018 and aimed at strengthening cooperation in various fields.

“Through this forum, we discuss various educational activities, training, ship visits, and collaboration in cooperation events,” Yayan said in a media statement obtained by Indonesia Business Post on Friday, December 20, 2024.

Deputy Russian Navy Chief of Staff, Rear Admiral Vladimir Zemskov, appreciated Indonesia’s neutral stance in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He assessed that Indonesia’s free and active foreign policy reflects Indonesia’s commitment to building good relations with various countries.

Defense diplomacy

Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff, Admiral Muhammad Ali, emphasized this cooperation is in line with the policy of the Ministry of Defense which encourages increased international relations to support Indonesia’s foreign policy. This cooperation is also in line with the motto of the Indonesian Navy, “Jalesveva Jayamahe.” or “In the ocean we are glorious”.

The Navy-to-Navy Talks is expected to further strengthen the synergy between the Indonesian Navy and the Russian Navy in supporting capacity building and regional maritime security.

In this meeting, the two navies discussed a number of strategic agendas, including:

  1. Indonesian Navy participation in The Main Naval Parade 2025 in Russia.
  2. Implementation of the Multilateral Naval Exercise Komodo (MNEK) 2025.
  3. ORRUDA Naval Exercise.
  4. Cooperation agreement in emergency search and rescue (SAR) operations for submarine accidents and their crews.
  5. Education and training programs involving both navies.
  6. Implementation of Passex as part of a ship’s visit to the port (Port Visit).
