PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk is expanding to build a data center in Batam, Riau Islands province, in 2022. The opening of the new data center is related to the company’s expansion to the Singaporean market.

Telkom is a multinational telecommunications company established in 1965. The state-owned company provides communication infrastructure. It has subsidiaries such as Telkomsel, Mitratel, Telkomsigma, Telkomsat, TelkomMetra, Telin, Infomedia Nusantara, TelkomProperty, Flexi, Telkomcel, Telin Singapore, PT MetraPlasa, Bangtelindo, Telin Hong Kong and many more.

Data center expansion

Telkom has been developing Indonesia’s telecommunication and infrastructure, hoping to expand the data center market to Singapore. The company is ready not only for domestic market but also for international expansions.

“We also operate data centers in Jurong, Singapore, which now is already running. Also, we are going to develop in Batam to readdress the Singaporean-Indonesian market,” said Telkom CEO Ririek Adriansyah at the 2022 Investor Daily Summit in Jakarta on October 11, 2022.

Telkom guarantees the data centers with enhanced security tailored for its customers and in each data center there are security measures that even Telkom cannot access.

According to Adriansyah, the security system of data centers consists of two levels: The safety of the data center itself and the safety of the users of the data center itself.

As a state-owned enterprise with a capitalization reaching IDR 427 trillion, Telkom will bring a security guarantee to the users. The company will also follow the existing regulations, especially since the data centers receive certificates of credibility.

Risks behind data center investments

Data centers contain risks such as height, environmental and electrical hazards, facility safety system hazards and common procedure risks, according to Julia Borgini of the Spacebarpress Media as quoted by techtarget.com. She added that creating a comprehensive safety plan and assessing the level of risk were a must for data center companies.

Meanwhile, Mike West, CEO of Digital Infrastructure Advisors Ltd (Dial), said that the number one issue for anyone involved in the data center industry was cybersecurity. “Data is growing exponentially and it’s becoming more and more valuable, and the security of that data is more important than it’s ever been. At the moment, organizations aren’t doing enough to mitigate the huge risk that cybersecurity presents,” he said on February 8, 2022, as quoted by datacenterdynamics.com.
