Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), Erick Thohir says the government has decided to cancel the Terminal 4 construction of the Soekarno-Hatta Airport (SHIA) as the capacity of the existing terminals is sufficient to meet current passenger need.

“We have decided to cancel Terminal 4,” Erick said at the Parliamentary Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday, November 4, 2024.

He cited that with a budget of around Rp1 trillion (US$88.8 million), Terminals 1, 2, and 3 could be optimized by improving existing spaces and routes, making it much more efficient than the original budget of approximately Rp14 trillion needed for a new terminal construction.

Another example of this efficiency approach is the renovation at Bali Airport, which has increased capacity from around 23-25 million to 32 million passengers.

Erick emphasized that SOEs will ensure that infrastructure projects are executed efficiently to avoid the potential for corruption, stressing the importance of well-managed and measured projects.

The construction of Terminal 4 entered the design tender phase in 2019, with State-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II managing the process and AirAsia Indonesia expressing interest in making it a terminal specifically for low-cost carriers (LCC).

However, with the focus now on optimizing existing terminal capacity, the Terminal 4 construction plan has officially been canceled.
