PT PLN (Persero), has joined forces with China’s Tebian Electric Apparatus (TBEA) Co Ltd to explore cooperation in the study and development of electrical manufacturing businesses aimed at accelerating the energy transition in Indonesia.

This collaboration was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between PLN and TBEA during the Indonesia-China Business Forum (ICBF) held on October 17, 2023.

Darmawan Prasodjo, President Director of PLN, highlighted the gradual shift towards new renewable energy sources (EBT) as part of the government’s energy transition program.

Additionally, PLN is actively implementing an energy transition scenario, with the goal of increasing the ratio of renewable energy-based power plants to 75% by 2040, supported by super grids and smart grids.

Collaboration for transition

To support this ambitious transition, PLN has been collaborating with companies renowned for their expertise in the study and development of manufacturing equipment and renewable energy power plants.

“We are building an ambitious energy transition scenario, but we cannot bear this burden alone, so collaboration is necessary. Collaboration in policy, technology, innovation, investment, and more,” stated Darmawan on October 20, 2023.

Through this MoU, both parties will collaborate in research and development of electrical equipment manufacturing and infrastructure, including renewable energy power plants such as solar power plants (PLTS), hydroelectric power plants (PLTA), wind power plants (PLTB), pumped storage hydropower, and hydrogen energy power plants in Indonesia.

Darmawan explained that this joint study will be formulated promptly to expedite the transfer of knowledge, business, technical expertise, and risk management in the development of renewable energy power plants.

“Developing this process also includes enhancing the capacity of PLN employees in the development of renewable energy technology and businesses,” he added.

During the occasion, the PLN delegation also visited TBEA’s showroom to inspect the company’s electrical products, including EBT technology, transformers, switchgear, gas-insulated switchgear, high-voltage direct current equipment, and other apparatus.

Aggressive business development for TBEA

Huang Hanjie, TBEA President, described the cooperation with PLN as an aggressive business development for TBEA. Considering PLN’s energy transition plan, it represents a potential business opportunity for TBEA.

TBEA is also interested in collaborating on the investment in manufacturing electrical infrastructure equipment to increase Domestic Component Level (TKDN) in Indonesia.

TBEA is a part of the global transmission company, and it believes that a robust and flexible transmission and interconnection network is a significant driver for renewable energy development. According to TBEA, Indonesia, with its abundant natural resources, can become a cornerstone of global energy transition.

“Indonesia is one of the countries with aggressive and forward-looking development potential. We see this collaboration as a positive step for the future,” said Huang.
