Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) and Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Incorporated (TEPCO HD) sign a collaborative agreement for low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia development.
In a significant move towards sustainable energy solutions, Pertamina NRE and TEPCO HD have signed an agreement for the joint development of low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia. The signing ceremony, which took place in Tokyo, Japan, involved Dannif Danusaputro, CEO of Pertamina NRE, and Chikara Kojima, Executive Vice President of TEPCO HD. This collaboration coincided with the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) event.
The agreement outlines the structure and schedule of collaborative activities, with Pertamina NRE and TEPCO HD set to work together on the first-phase project, scheduled to commence in 2024. The partners are preparing for the construction of hydrogen production facilities at the Lahendong geothermal power plant owned by PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy, a subsidiary of Pertamina NRE located in North Sulawesi.
On October 18, 2022, Pertamina NRE and TEPCO HD had previously signed a joint study agreement for the development of green hydrogen and ammonia in the Lahendong geothermal area in Sulawesi Utara. The joint study, supported by the National Research and Development Agency of Japan (NEDO), aimed to advance technology development for sustainable community living.
“Clean hydrogen is one of Pertamina’s future businesses. We are very enthusiastic about collaborating with TEPCO as a globally reputable partner for the development of green hydrogen and ammonia. We believe this collaboration will create significant value, especially in energy transition and decarbonization efforts,” stated Dannif on December 18, 2023.
“We are delighted that our technology can contribute to decarbonization initiatives in Indonesia, particularly through collaboration with Pertamina NRE, a leading green energy company in Southeast Asia,” Kojima added.
The hydrogen produced in this collaboration will primarily involve the electrolysis process, with a focus on clean hydrogen, including green hydrogen generated using carbon-free renewable energy sources such as geothermal.
Clean hydrogen plays a strategic role in energy transition, offering a viable solution to replace fossil fuels in hard-to-abate industries such as oil refineries, steel production, heavy industries, and heavy-duty transportation.
Pertamina NRE and TEPCO HD aim to leverage Indonesia’s abundant geothermal resources for the cost-effective and beneficial production of hydrogen and ammonia, contributing to a carbon-neutral society.
Clean hydrogen development is a key element of Pertamina NRE’s future business portfolio, aligning with its commitment to decarbonization and the roadmap to achieve net-zero emissions.
