PT Mineral Industri Indonesia (MIND ID) is planning to focus on forming a consortium and looking for more partners in the construction of an electric vehicle battery factory.
Previously, MIND ID stated that it would play a full role in the development of the battery and electric vehicle ecosystem in the country.
To achieve such goal, MIND ID also opens opportunities for the private sector to cooperate in developing the electric vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia.
“We need partners, including private partners who can provide mining services and then exploration services,” said Hendi Prio Santoso, President Director of MIND ID.
In detail, ANTAM will supply raw materials for batteries in the form of nickel, cobalt, manganese and aluminum. Meanwhile, in the refining and seed processing sector, ANTAM’s ferronickel smelter in East Halmahera and PT Inalum’s smelter will be used.
Currently, MIND is already involved in an ecosystem industry that is integrated from upstream to downstream. From mining, refining and processing industry, battery production to recycling.
Furthermore, MIND ID will also participate in the battery production process and electric vehicle production through the Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC).
Meanwhile, through the formation of the consortium, MIND ID plans to build an electric vehicle battery factory with a capacity of 15 GW in 2027, valued at US$ 12 billion (IDR 183.9 trillion).
“The plan is until 2027, US$ 12 billion,” said Hendi, on August 14, 2023.
Hendi said the project would be carried out by PT Aneka Tambang (ANTAM) together with a company from China, Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL).
On the other hand, Hendi said the government is also continuing to develop supporting infrastructure for electric vehicles.
“But of course the market development must also be involved. This means that four-wheeled vehicles and two-wheeled vehicles [EV] must first exist in Indonesia,” he said.
