The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has approved more than 480 out of 800 Work Plans and Budget Costs (RKAB) of coal mining companies to date.

Director of Coal Business Development of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Lana Saria, revealed that until now only about 480 RKABs that have been approved, while the rest are still in verification process.

“Some have not paid their receivables so RKABs are rejected, others are being sorted out, and many others have yet to register data and information of their board of directors with MODI (Coal and Mineral One Data Indonesia) that we will still return them for completion later on,” Lana said as quoted by Kontan.co.id on Monday, January 29, 2023.

She said that the RKAB approval process will depend on the company concerned, with all the returned documents must be sorted out first before being submitted back to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

“If they were late in submitting back the documents, the documents will be rejected and then they will not be able to carry out their activities. So it depends on them to clear up all the documents,” said Lana.

In 2024, the government has set a coal production target of 710 million tons, higher than the 2023 plan of 695 million tons.

According to the January 29, 2024 data at MODI, the realization of national coal production reached 40.33 million tons with details of domestic realization of 10.46 million tons and exports of 13.71 million tons.

Throughout 2023, the realization of coal production was 775 million tons, exceeding the government’s plan. The details are 213 million tons for domestic needs (DMO) and 518 million tons for export.

The increase in domestic coal utilization is due to more demand as additional new coal-fired power plants from the 35 GW project are being completed.
