PT Beurer Indonesia Technology, a subsidiary of German healthcare device manufacturer Beurer GmbH, has opened a factory at the Kendal Special Economic Zone (KEK) in Central Java, making it the first such production facility in Southeast Asia.

Founded in 1919, Beurer GmbH is a leading producer of medical equipment with a global presence in 140 countries and annual revenues of US$500 million (Rp7.8 trillion).

The company’s decision to expand to Indonesia was formalized on April 17, 2023, when Beurer signed an investment agreement with KEK Kendal at the Hannover Messe event in Germany.

The signing was witnessed by Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Airlangga Hartarto, and Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, in a ceremony opened by then President Joko Widodo and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Marco Bühler, CEO of PT Beurer Indonesia Technology, expressed excitement about the company’s expansion into Southeast Asia.

“We already have two factories in Europe, located in Hungary and Moldova, as well as two in China. Now, we are proud to open our first factory in Southeast Asia here in KEK Kendal, Indonesia. The products manufactured here will include a range of healthcare devices such as blood pressure monitors, therapy lamps, and massage items,” Bühler said on Tuesday, October 22, 2024.

With a total investment of US$8 million, the factory is expected to employ 50 to 100 workers. During its first year of operation, the facility will focus on producing massage devices, with plans to expand production to other healthcare equipment in the future.

Juliani Kusumaningrum, Head of Sales for Kendal Industrial Park, emphasized that Beurer is one of the first European companies to operate in the zone, enhancing the local ecosystem for medical equipment manufacturing.

“Beside the fiscal incentives we offer as a SEZ, our commitment to service is critical, ensuring that companies like Beurer receive seamless support for permits, workforce recruitment, and facility utilization,” she said on Tuesday.

Beurer’s presence in Kendal SEZ is expected to attract more European investments into Indonesia while creating positive economic ripple effects for the local community, particularly in Kendal Regency.

The factory’s operations will also bolster Indonesia’s standing as a hub for the medical device industry in Southeast Asia.
