Prabowo meets former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, discusses global issues

Indonesian Defence Minister and President elect Prabowo Subianto met with former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (1997-2007) and Executive Chairman of the Tony Blair Institute (TBI), Tony Blair, at the Ministry of Defense in Jakarta on Friday, April 19, 2024.

Prabowo said he had a fruitful and productive discussion with Tony Blair as they could exchange ideas related to defense and other global issues.

Meanwhile, Country Director of the Tony Blair Institute Indonesia, Shuhaela Haqim said that in the meeting both parties agreed that one of the keys to achieving prosperity and improving the quality of life of the Indonesian people is through a national transformation strategy that requires upholding state security and stability. 

“In addition, strategic efforts such as extreme poverty alleviation through the provision of nutritious food, local economic empowerment, digital transformation, and the implementation of financial inclusion are needed. All of these are transformative steps to become a developed country,” Shuhaela said. 

At the end of the meeting, the former UK prime ninister presented a book of memoirs written by him, entitled “A Journey”. The book contains the story of Tony Blair’s political journey.

Earlier, on Thursday, April 18, 2024, Tony Blair and President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo met at the State Palace to discuss energy investment and acceleration of digital transformation.

Also attending Tony Blair’s meeting with Prabowo were TBI Asia Regional Managing Director Jalil Rasheed, TBI Southeast Asia Regional Director Damian Hickey, and TBI Indonesia Country Director Shuhaela Haqim.
