Indonesia’s ambitious plan to export electricity to Singapore is edging closer to realization, with President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo spearheading efforts to develop the nation’s green energy industry. The initiative, which involves exporting electricity generated from solar power plants (PLTS) to Singapore, is seen as a key step towards enhancing bilateral cooperation and promoting sustainable energy solutions.

During a recent Leader’s Retreats session at the Bogor Palace, President Jokowi emphasized the importance of expediting the implementation of the electricity export deal with Singapore. The discussions underscored Indonesia’s commitment to leveraging its renewable energy potential to meet regional energy demands and foster economic development.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong of Singapore expressed optimism about Indonesia’s role in driving the green economy in Southeast Asia. The bilateral discussions reaffirmed both countries’ commitment to strengthening cooperation in various sectors, including energy, trade, and investment.

The electricity export deal aims to transmit four gigawatts of renewable energy from the Riau Islands to Singapore by 2027-2035, marking a significant milestone in regional energy cooperation. The project aligns with Indonesia’s broader efforts to promote clean energy technologies, including carbon capture and storage (CCS), to address climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The signing of agreements between Indonesia and Singapore reflects their shared commitment to fostering sustainable energy partnerships and addressing regional energy challenges. As both countries move forward with their energy cooperation, opportunities for collaboration in technology exchange, investment, and trade are expected to flourish, driving mutual prosperity and sustainable development.
