The Indonesian government signed the accession to the Nice Agreement about International Classification of Goods and Services, which will open up opportunities to register Indonesian brands on the international stage.
The Nice Classification (NCL), established by the Nice Agreement (1957), is an international classification of goods and services applied for the registration of marks. A new edition is published every five years and, since 2013, a new version of each edition is published annually.
Andap Budhi Revianto, Secretary General of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham) revealed that Yasonna Laoly, the Minister of Law and Human Rights had attended the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) meeting in Geneva, Switzerland.
“The Minister, who attended the WIPO meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, reported that the traditional products of the nation can now become international brands,” said Andap, on July 10, 2023.
With the accession of the Nice Agreement, it will regulate the international classification of goods and services for the purpose of registering marks.
Encourage the promotion of Indonesian unique and traditional names
This agreement is useful for encouraging the promotion of Indonesian unique and traditional names as well as facilitating the determination of the class of goods in national and international mark registration and compliance with international standards through the Madrid Protocol.
The Madrid Protocol is one of two treaties consisting of the Madrid System for international registration of trademarks. The Madrid System is a system that provides cost-effective solutions for registering and managing trademarks worldwide.
“Meanwhile, the accession is an act of the Indonesian government to be bound to become a party to an international agreement, thereby facilitating the registration of Indonesian traditional marks at the international level,” he said.
Currently, the Nice Agreement accession instrument has been handed over to Daren Tang, Director General of WIPO.
“ss,” he said.
