State energy company PT Pertamina is putting all the efforts to address the energy trilemma, which involves optimizing national oil and gas production to ensure energy security and affordability, while simultaneously adhering to environmental sustainability principles.
To maintain national energy security, Pertamina continues to work towards meeting the government’s production targets from upstream activities. Concurrently, the government is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving the net zero emission (NZE) target by 2060, with a significant focus on reducing emissions from the energy sector.
Pertamina is tackling this energy trilemma through a two-pronged strategy. “First, by maximizing our existing business. Second, by accelerating the development of low-carbon products,” Indira Pratyaksa, Vice President for Sustainability Program, Rating & Engagement at PT Pertamina, said on Wednesday, August 7, 2024.
Pertamina ensures the availability of energy for the public by boosting oil and gas production, while simultaneously aiming to reduce carbon emissions and gradually transition to renewable energy. This dual approach is essential to meet the energy trilemma challenge head-on.
“This is not a choice. Both strategies are necessary to confront the energy trilemma,” Indira emphasized.
Indira spoke at KATADATA SAFE 2024, a forum that has been organized annually by Katadata Indonesia since 2020. The event addresses issues and solutions related to sustainable economic development.
In maximizing its existing business, PT Pertamina has implemented several strategies, including enhancing refinery quality to produce high-quality, high-value products. The company also will continue to transform its retail fuel business.
Regarding low-carbon product development, Pertamina has begun producing biofuels such as bioethanol, biodiesel, and aviation fuel containing bio-based materials, known as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
Additionally, the company has started trials for carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology, as well as Nature-Based Solutions (NBS).
Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Vice President for Corporate Communication at Pertamina, added that the company is also addressing the energy trilemma by optimizing resources across the Pertamina Group and strengthening collaborations with various partners from the private sector, government, and academia.
