State energy company PT Pertamina has strengthened cooperation in the measurement and quantification of methane emissions with Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC), formalizing the cooperation through the signing of a Joint-Study Agreement (JSA) at the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Ministerial Meeting 2024 on Thursday, August 22, 2024.
The synergy aims to conduct a comprehensive study on the measurement and quantification of methane emissions from upstream oil and gas activities and promote efforts to reduce methane emissions in the Donggi-Matindok Block and JOB Tomori as part of the efforts to accelerate energy transition and deal with climate change.
The JSA was signed by Pertamina Director of Strategy, Portfolio and Business Development, Salyadi Saputra; Director of Pertamina EP for Region IV, Muhamad Arifin; and General Manager of JOB Pertamina Medco E&P Tomori Sulawesi, Andry Sehang. In addition, Executive Vice President and Member of the Board for Energy Business of JOGMEC, Hiroyuki Mori.
The JSA is a continuation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed earlier at the ASEAN – Japan Economic Co-Creation Forum, which was held on the sidelines of the AZEC Ministerial Meeting 2023 in Tokyo.
Salyadi Saputra said the signing marks Pertamina’s next step towards achieving Net Zero Emission (NZE) by 2060 or sooner.
He cited that accurate measurement of methane emissions is crucial as it has the potential to trigger global warming, even up to 28 times greater than carbon dioxide.
“So, methane emissions are important for Pertamina to mitigate climate change. The partnership with JOGMEC will support us in aligning with global best practice and improve Pertamina’s ability to manage methane emissions,” Salyadi said in a statement on August 23, 2024.
Pertamina Vice President for Corporate Communication, Fadjar Djoko Santoso added that Pertamina is the first Indonesian company to join the Oil & Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0), a global initiative for methane gas reporting and mitigation.
“We look forward to increasing collaboration in the future to drive sustainable business across Pertamina’s businesses. Synergizing with industry leaders and adopting new technologies, Pertamina can lead the way in methane gas management, which in turn can support Indonesia’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) from the energy sector,” Fadjar said.
Hiroyuki Mori said two parties have long synergized on energy resource development, with a good relationship.
“We look forward to working together through this JSA on this challenging project, related to methane emission management in the natural gas value chain. Through this project, we will study effective ways to reduce methane emissions using international standard methods, based on actual conditions in Southeast Asia,” Hiroyuki said.
