A senior government official has revealed that Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has a road map in energy sector to achieve net zero emission through energy efficiency, the development of renewable energy and the moratorium of coal-fired power plant (PLTU).
“As you know, there is no new coal-fired power plant established right now. And we do so much on the coal phase down by using the biomass. But I think we have not reached the target yet,” Director General of New and Renewable Energy at the ESDM ministry, Eniya Listiani Dewi, told the Indonesia Energy Transition Dialog 2024 in Jakarta on Monday, November 4, 2024.
She said the ministry set a target of 2.2 million tons of biomass use, but so far Indonesia’s cnsumption of biomass is just at 600,000 tons.
“So we need to increase the coal phase down activities,” she said.
Another focus on the road map is renewable energy, where the government is agressively pursuing the renewable energy development. New ministerial cabinet, she added, will have much more focus on the investment on the transmission and the infrastructure of renewable energy needed.
In addition to this, the government will be more active in energy efficiency.
She said that Indonesia can reduce emission by 32 percent just by undertaking energy efficiency, enhancing the energy mix and energy conservation.
“Within next year, we will make it mandatory for energy management in all buildings in Jakarta,” she cited.
“The ESDM ministry will issue two more ministerial regulation on the management of energy,” she added.
