The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has sealed a 30.16-kilometer sea fence located in the waters off Tangerang Regency, Banten that had been erected without securing the permit, known as the Suitability of Marine Space Utilization Activities (KKPRL).
“We have sealed the sea fence that had gone viral,” Director General of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Resources Supervision (PSDKP) at KKP, Pung Nugroho Saksono, told a press conference in Tangerang on Thursday, January 9, 2025.
Pung, who led the sealing himself, said that the fence not only violates the rules, but also disrupts the activities of local fishermen.
“We checked the fence at the KKP and there is no KKPRL on it, so the fence has no permit. The government, in this case the KKP, is present to seal the sea fence,” he cited, while adding that the sealing is a response to complaints from local fishermen and part of the KKP’s commitment to enforcing marine spatial planning regulations.
He said further that this action was taken upon the instruction of President Prabowo Subianto and direct direction from the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono.
“The President has instructed. This morning, the Minister ordered me directly to carry out the sealing. The state must not lose. We are here because this has disturbed the community,” he said.
The KKP has given a maximum deadline of 20 days to the party responsible to dismantle the fence. Otherwise, the dismantling will be carried out directly by KKP officers. “We will investigate who the owner is. If it is certain, we will take further action,” Pung said.
About the Sea Fence
Based on results of an investigation by the Banten Provincial Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Agency (DKP), the sea fence stretches from Muncung Village to Pakuhaji Village in the waters off Tangerang Regency, crossing 16 villages in six sub-districts.
The details include three villages in Kronjo Sub-district, three villages in Kemiri Sub-district, four villages in Mauk Sub-district, one village in Sukadiri Sub-district, three villages in Pakuhaji Sub-district, and two villages in Teluknaga Sub-district. The area is adjacent to the Pantai Indah Kapuk I and II projects owned by Agung Sedayu Group.
Head of the Banten Provincial Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Agency, Eli Susiyanti, said that the fence structure is made of bamboo with an average height of six meters. On top of it, bamboo mats, paranets, and sandbags are installed as weights.
Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, said that the sea fence will be revoked if it does not have a KKPRL permit.
“I have asked the Director General of PSDKP to check the location directly and ensure a follow-up,” Sakti said in Karawang, West Java, as quoted by Antara, on Thursday, January 9, 2025.
