Indonesia is trying to increase its oil production that has been dropping since 2020, reversing the declining production trend by exploiting old oil fields and try to find new oil fields.

“In the short term, there are 6 prospects that will start the production in 2028,” Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Arifin Tasrif, said on Friday, August 2, 2024.

Indonesia produced 708,000 barrel oil per day in 2020 and 578,000 barrel oil per day in 2024.

The six prospects are Ande Ande Lumut oil field, Singa Laut Kuda Laut field, Hidayah field, BUIC field, OO-OX field and Forel field. The total production of the field is around 100,000 oil barrel per day .

Beside the six oil fields, the government is trying to increase oil from recovery of the existing wells. Usually the increase of production from recovery is 30 percent. So the government requested State oil and gas company Pertamina to increase the production from recovery into 50 percent.

“For that, Pertamina will cooperate with companies that have experience and technology. So, one month ago we went to China, and China has a capability to increase production into 40 percent to 50 percent. The government integrates the new oil and field and oil recovery to increase production,” Arifin said.

In addition to this, in Rokan block, there are two more wells are being drilled. Indonesia is trying to secure shale oil with the deep of 2 thousands feets on shores
with a collaboration with US company.

” We are analyzing the stones. They are all good, one of the factors is our stones contain clay based materials. The materials can carry out clay based process so we can rely on shale oil,” Arifin added.

If the process is succesful, the minister said Indonesia can produce additional oil of 80 thousands barrel.

While in Cepu, Central Java, Exxon Mobil is carrying out infill drilling. The drilling can add more production for 20 thousands barrel per day.

In addition to this the government has ordered Pertamina also to manage idle wells.

“These are our short-term efforts to manage oil production . We also give support in terms of policy, and others,” the minister said.
