In an effort to implement a new renewable energy ecosystem, Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with seven State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs).

IBC is an investment holding company in the development of renewable energy materials through the development of electric vehicle battery ecosystems and battery energy storage systems.

The seven BUMNs are in five sectors including telecommunications, plantations and food, defense, tourism and transportation. These seven BUMNs are PT Telkom Indonesia, PT Perkebunan Nusantara III, PT Pupuk Indonesia Indonesia Utilitas, PT LEN Industri, PT Aviasi Wisata Indonesia, PT INKA, and PT Prima Grand Fleet. This signing took place on April 29, 2024.

Rabin Indrajad Hattari, Secretary of the Ministry of SOEs, said that the SOEs Ministry really supports this collaboration. This is a foundation that can provide inspiration and benchmarks for sustainable development.

“We encourage other SOEs to collaborate to accelerate the energy transition within the SOEs environment,” Rabin said on May 1, 2024.

It is believed that this step is part of an effort to support the government’s policy in achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2060. Through various development initiatives, including a new energy system which is currently being developed by IBC.

Previously, the Ministry of SOEs had also promoted the adoption of electric vehicles for operational activities.

“The acceleration of the implementation of the new energy ecosystem is in line with the spirit and mandate given by the Minister of SOEs to IBC to become the leading party in the development of regional electric vehicles and battery hubs, which is of course sustainable with the development of the integrated nickel downstream industry currently being carried out by IBC,” Toto Nugroho, President Director of IBC, said.

With this, IBC invites all parties including BUMN, government agencies, the private sector and stakeholders to collaborate in expanding the battery and electric vehicle ecosystem.

In the process towards Net Zero 2060, Indonesia has taken the first steps in initiating a new renewable energy ecosystem in 2024 which includes the use of electric trail motorbikes for plantation areas, the use of lithium ion batteries for telecommunications, the implementation of a fleet of electric motorbikes and electric buses for tourism areas, the use of battery cells IBC for the defense industry, and implementation of battery energy storage for use on trains.

Meanwhile, this step, apart from reducing carbon emissions, will also create a new market for the nickel battery downstreaming carried out by IBC, as well as opening up opportunities for domestic industry and employment through localization of the ecosystem industry.

In its implementation, IBC partners with global players so that the technology adopted has good performance. This partnership can also increase human resource capabilities and potential for technology transfer.
