Koaksi Indonesia, a non-profit organization for sustainable development programs, has issued recommendations that will encourage nickel downstreaming and help contribute to the creation of green jobs.

Ridwan Arif, Research and Knowledge Management Manager of Koaksi Indonesia, said the recommendation was issued so that the downstreaming policy can increase the added value of Indonesian products, as well as consider sustainable and environmentally friendly aspects.

The first recommendation is that the government and nickel smelter companies must increase multi-party collaboration and coordination.

“Collaboration should not only involve the government, but also business actors and civil society organizations,” Ridwan said on Tuesday, January 21, 2025.

Second, the Koaksi recommends that the government consider incentive and disincentive policies to encourage environmentally friendly nickel industry practices.

Meanwhile, Ridwan added, all parties must avoid greenwashing downstream efforts by increasing the accountability and transparency of the bicycle industry, including in the context of environmental impacts.

“So we have to be in line with the energy transition agenda and nickel downstreaming can be one way for us to transition the energy itself,” he said.

Earlier in 2022, the Koaksi Indonesia conducted research on the potential for Green Jobs in Indonesia in the energy sector. Based on this research, the potential for creating green jobs in Indonesia is very large and must be prepared immediately from now on.

“The projected job creation in this sector is 15.3 million by 2045,” Ridwan said while quoting the research results.

“This strategic step needs to be prepared, such as building an ecosystem that requires active participation from various stakeholders, ranging from ministries, the general public, academics, mass media, to the private sector, as well as the need for media to socialize green jobs opportunities, especially for young people,” he concluded.
