PT PLN Indonesia Power (PLN IP) has ensured that the 50-Megawatt (MW) Singkarak Floating Solar Power Plant (PLTS) on Lake Singkarak, West Sumatra, will start operating or commissioning on date (COD) in 2027. The PLTS was developed together with ACWA Power, an energy company from Saudi Arabia.

Edwin Nugraha Putra, President Director of PLN Indonesia Power, said that the Singkarak Floating PLTS, developed together with Saudi energy company ACWA Power, is one of the implementations of the Hijaunesia Program launched in 2020 to accelerate renewable energy in Indonesia and support the NZE 2060 target.

The Singkarak Lake PLTS will later become the largest PLTS in Sumatra. The development of new and renewable energy  (EBT) has also been listed in the 2021-2030 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL).

“In terms of illustration, 50 MWac (Megawatt alternating current) or 76 MWp (Megawatt peak) of the Singkarak PLTS capacity can provide electricity to 40 thousand homes with green electricity and enter the electricity system of western Sumatra,” Edwin said on Sunday, January 19, 2025.

He cited that the development of solar energy potential at the Singkarak PLTS is a reliable technological solution in achieving an energy mix of 23 percent.

The Singkarak PLTS is expected to be able to make major contribution in reducing carbon emissions, increasing energy efficiency and creating a greener and more sustainable energy future.

In the future, this PLTS will utilize an area of 49 hectares (ha), or around 0.45 percent of the total area of Lake Singkarak of 10,780 ha, so as to maintain the environmental balance and ecosystem function of the lake.
