Fahri Hamzah, Deputy Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas, reveals that Qatar is committed to building six million homes in Indonesia, a considerable spike from earlier commitment of one million homes.
“The additional five million housing units are commitment made by the Qatari government,” Fahri said on his official Instagram account as quoted on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.
Initially, Qatar was committed to building one million houses through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.
The MOU signing on Wednesday was witnessed by Maruarar Sirait, Minister of Housing and Residential Areas. Meanwhile, Qatar was represented by Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Abdul Rahman Hassan Al-Thani, Secretary General of the Qatar Royal Family Council and Chairman of Qatar Board of Trustees of the Humanitarian Fund.
The ratification of the MoU was also witnessed by Hashim Djojohadikusumo, Head of the Indonesian Housing Task Force; and Rosan P. Roeslani, Minister of Investment; and Erick Thohir, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs); and Fahri Hamzah, Deputy Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas; and Anis Matta, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Hashim said that the MoU is a collaboration between the Indonesian and Qatari governments, with the Indonesian government preparing unused land to be part of the land used for the construction of one million housing units.
“Because this is G2G, the state is present to prepare idle and non-problematic land that is ready to be built,” Hashim said.
The 6 million housing units will be developed on a number of state-owned plots of land, such as those owned by State railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), and State housing developer Perum Perumnas.
In addition, the government is preparing a number of plots of land in Kemayoran and Senayan, Central Jakarta, owned by the Ministry of State Secretariat. The government will also utilize a number of plots of land owned by the Directorate General of State Assets (DJKN) of the Ministry of Finance in Kalibata, South Jakarta.
“We will also bring investors here to move quickly so they can understand the rules in Indonesia,” Maruarar told a press conference after MOU signing on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.
However, Maruarar did not provide additional information on the value of the project, nor investment from Qatar related to the construction of one million housing units. He said the construction of the housing would target several areas outside Jakarta, such as Banten and West Java.
